Food & Accommodation

Food

Mendocino County brings to mind several foods that I like very much — Dungeness Crab, Apples, Pears, mushrooms, and Lamb. Until the late 19th century, members of the Pomo tribe were the principal inhabitants of the remote Anderson Valley. Then came sheep ranchers and apple farmers who kept to themselves, creating a private language — Boontling. Logging of the Redwoods in these early days instigated the planting of grapes by Italian immigrants to make wine for the loggers.

Things To Do In Anderson Valley

Mendocino Crab & Wine Days Every January they hold the Mendocino Crab & Wine Days. On Saturday night we attended the Knight’s of Columbus Crab Fest in the Crown Hall located in the town of Mendocino (707-937-0588). Everyone sat at long tables and boisterously enjoyed fresh cooked Dungeness Crab, tossed green salad, French bread and wine. They passed bottles of Mendocino wine up and down the table. I did learn that if you want butter with your crab your bring you own. Of course, the locals were all prepared. All the time we were eating people kept jumping up on the stage and entertaining everyone. They ended with a raffle of many kinds of Anderson Valley Wine. A good time was had by all! The wineries in Anderson Valley hold Winemaker dinners, offer special barrel tastings, serve crab appetizers in tasting rooms, and hold an annual "best crab wine" competition. www.goMendo.com

Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival Next May, Anderson Valley hosts the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival. In 2006 they began the festival on Saturday with technical briefings at the fairgrounds in downtown Boonville. They broke at noon for a catered lunch with Pinot Noir. In the evening everyone brought a bottle of wine to share at a BBQ. On Sunday they held a grand tasting at Scharffenberger Winery. They accompanied the tasting with a lovely buffet lunch.

Lunch Table at the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival

In the evening everyone attended a winery dinner. We attended the dinner at Goldeneye where Chef Dory Kahn prepared the food. Goldeneye, owned by Dan Duckhorn, has a beautiful new tasting room in Anderson Valley and they are in the design stages for a new state of the art winery. The dinner featured duck — what else would Dan Duckhorn serve with his beautiful Goldeneye Pinot Noir. www.avwines.com

Anderson Valley, Mendocino County Pinot Noirs

Anderson Valley, in California’s Mendocino County, is located north of Sonoma county and about 100 miles north of San Francisco. Only 85,000 people live in Mendocino County. They tell people that grapes are their largest legal crop??? Forest covers 2/3 of this very mountainous area. Cutting laterally through the Coast Range, the Pacific Ocean lies 10 to 15 miles away.

Anderson Valley qualifies as a Region 1 growing area. This means the weather is the coolest climate in which grapes may be commercially grown with any success. The combination of warm sunny days and cool foggy nights and mornings allow the grapes from this region to mature slowly and to develop to the height of their varietal character.

It is so cold in the winter that Pierce’s disease is killed. Pierce’s disease is a bacterial disease spread by insects known as sharpshooters or leafhoppers. It has devastated areas of California's vineyards. There is no known treatment, although the problem is subject to considerable research. They have frost on a regular basis and use sprinklers for protection.

Long, warm Indian summers allow the Pinot Noir growers to keep acid development in line with sugar and flavor formation. They also grow superb Gewurztraminer and Riesling, giving rise to the valley’s annual Alsatian festival. They are also know for their methode champenoise sparkling houses, including Roederer Estate, which also makes a nice Pinot Noir.

Anderson Vally from Esterlina Vineyards

The planted acreage in the Anderson Valley consists primarily of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and White Riesling. There are also small acreages of other varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. They believe Red Wine should come from Red soils — it’s a Mendocino thing!

For additional information on Mendocino County and Anderson Valley I recommend the following web sites:

Appellation America has a very interesting feature that allows you to view satellite imagery of vineyards. Find the winery that you are interested in, scroll to the map at the bottom of the page and click on the "Satellite" button. And if you are really interested in getting a lay of the land you can use Google Earth to get a 3D view of the area. Visit Google Earth to download the free version.

Some of the wineries that especially caught my attention are Elke Vineyards, Estralina Vineyards, Goldeneye, Handley Cellars, and Londer Vineyards.

Elke Vineyards

Mary Elke farms about 60 acres at Donnelly Creek in Anderson Valley.  She grows fruit for Mumm Napa, Roederer Estate, Radio Coteau, Copain Wine Cellars, Londer Vineyards, Au Bon Climate, Mendocino Wine Company, Far Niete, ICI/La Bas, Franciscan, and Breggo Cellars.  Since 1997 Mary's been making small amounts of Pinot Noir with the help of winemaker Tom Farella.  She sells primarily to restaurants and on her website. www.elkevineyards.com

Esterlina Vineyards
Murio Sterling and his four sons, Eric, Stephen, Chris, and Craig, have been making wine in Anderson Valley for several generations. Eric, an emergency room doctor in Santa Rosa is the winemaker, Stephen performs sales and marketing, Chris manages the vineyards and Craig serves as general manager and general counsel.

They grow wine in Anderson Valley at their ranch and home as well as Cole Ranch in Mendocino County. They own all 253 acres of the Cole Ranch appellation that is the smallest of the American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). They also produce classic Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at their Russian River Valley Ranch. www.esterlinavineyards.com

Mary Elke

Goldeneye
Started in 1996 by Dan Duckhorn of Duckhorn Vineyards in Napa Valley, they released their first vintage in 2000. Dan named his winery after Northern diving ducks with short black bills, rounded heads, and yellow eyes. Today they have 149 acres planted with 23 different clonal grape varieties.

Beautiful Goldeneye Tasting Room

I understand they are in the planning stages for a state of the art winery in the near future. Today you can visit their beautiful tasting room built in a vintage farmhouse. Their website contains a wonderful recipe for Truffled Mushroom Ragout made with Pinot Noir. www.goldeneyewinery.com

Handley Cellars

The Handley Family vineyards include 12 acres of Pinot Noir. Milla Handley made the first Handley Cellars wine in 1982. In 1990 she made the decision to farm using sustainable agricultural methods. They offer tours of their estate vineyard if you call ahead. The tasting room includes a lovely garden courtyard open for picnics.

On the first weekend of every month, they offer a different food and wine pairing in their Anderson Valley tasting room. If you like Sauvignon Blanc try the Handley. It reminded me of lush ripe pears with hints of grapefruit. www.handleycellars.com

Londer Vineyards

Shirlee and Larry Londer

Shirlee and Larry Londer are formerly from Albuquerque, NM. Larry practiced ophthalmology and Shirlee managed the optical shop. This charming couple dreamed of someday planting a vineyard and producing wines. Their search for vineyard property ended in 1999 when they found their beautiful Anderson Valley property. They planted 15 acres of Pinot Noir and one acre of Gewurztraminer and were producing grapes by 2004.

With the help of winemaker Greg LaFollette they began producing wines in 2001 and have produced some astounding Pinot Noirs. Their wines have won the acclaim of greats such as Robert Parker and The Wine Spectator. I want to add my accolades to their wines as well because they are well deserved. Today Greg LaFollette functions as consulting Winemaker and Greg Davis functions as Assistant Winemaker.

Along with grapes they grow  strawberries, olives, plums, figs, tomatoes, a variety of leafy vegetables, lavender and a whole lot of raspberries. Shirlee has won many awards for her jams. www.londervineyards.com
